Blog #2: My Time With Kirby

Hello everyone, and welcome back for week 2! Sorry for the website change, but I feel Wix will work better in the long term, so I won’t have to switch as much. Plus, I get a free domain! Anyway, KIRBY. My beloved. My little pink puffball. So… my history with this character goes all the way back to 4th grade. This was when I got my first Kirby game for my birthday: Kirby Star Allies. And wow, I know public opinion of this game isn’t good, but I LOVE it. To be honest, this is in my top 10 Kirby games of all time. This single game, being at the time one of the only video games that I had, hooked me on 2D platformers. I doodled Kirby doodles in my math book, watched Kirby videos on my old Dell laptop, and attempted to buy more Kirby games. Now, I've played this game for ~15 hours, and to be honest, I haven’t even put the game card in for 3 years. To set the scene: I was slowing down in my Kirby mania during the holiday season of 2022, and I was starting to like Mario Maker. But just then, when I opened my first present on Christmas Day, I found my 2nd-favorite Kirby game of all time: Kirby and the Forgotten Land. And if I had to rate this game, this is a perfect 9/10. If Kirby Star Allies sent me into a Kirby mania, then Kirby and the Forgotten Land sent me into a… wait. Is there anything bigger than mania? Oh, wait, hyper-mania! It was a hyper-mania! In the first Kirby wave, I just doodled and watched, but with Forgotten Land, I BOUGHT—Kirby Planet Robobot, Kirby And The Rainbow Curse, and Kirby’s Epic Yarn. Anyway, after I bought those, I kind of slowly lost interest in the “cute platformer” genre. It was kind of like eating the same food over and over for 5 months. Each game started to blend in. I went from jumping around with a robot, to jumping around with a blue companion, to not jumping (which is funny, because I liked that one a lot). After beating those games, I kind of just… quit. Sure, to this day, I still play them from time to time, but nothing can beat the chokehold that Kirby had on me from 2020 to 2022.
